আমার অবিশ্বাস ঃ হুমায়ুন আজ়াদ

উচ্ছৃঙ্খলতা গ্রাস করেছে সেই ছোট্ট থেকে। যতই চাই কন্সেন্ট্রেট করতে, হয় না। সবই বোধহয় কালপুরুষের প্রভাব – অস্থিরতা উপগ্রহের তাড়না। মোক্ষম সময়ে স্বজনদের ডোবানোটাও আমার সহজাত – এটা বাঙালনামার বন্ধুরা বোঝেন বিলক্ষণ। যাইহোক, বিবেকের ‘ইয়ে’ (আসলে ঘটি তো, তাই ‘ইসে’টা খুব একটা বেরোয় না) বলেও তো কিছু একটা হয়, তাই এই চিঠি/না-চিঠি/অ-চিঠি বা সেই জাতীয় কিছু।

পায়ের তলায় সর্ষে, ফতুয়ার পকেটে বিড়ি-লাইটার এবং হাতে হুমায়ুন আজাদের ‘আমার অবিশ্বাস’ – এই নিয়েই আপাতত আমি। আজাদ পড়ছি অনেককাল। সত্যি বলতে কি, রাসেল বা মার্ক্সের ঢের আগে থেকেই আজাদ আমাকে আজাদ করেছেন কুলুঙ্গিতে রাখা ‘কেষ্টনগরীয়’ শিল্পকর্মের হাত থেকে। চরম প্রতিক্রিয়াশীল কেতাব থেকে শিখেছিলুম জীবনের তিনটি মহামন্ত্র – মাভৈ (ভয় করো না), মাগৃধ (লোভ করো না) এবং চরৈবেতি (এগিয়ে চলো); নন-কম্যুনিস্ট আজাদের লেখা পড়ে যুক্ত হয়েছে আরেকটি – “Knowledge never springs from faith. It springs from doubt.” ‘সভ্যতার সংকট’-এর একেবারে শেষে বৃদ্ধ ঘোষণা করেছিলেন, “মানুষের ওপর বিশ্বাস হারানো পাপ”; কিন্তু বলতে ভুলে গেছিলেন যে মানুষের শ্রেণীভিত্তি থাকে, তার ফলে গোটা সমাজটাকে বিশ্বাস করতে গেলে প্রোফ. ফার্মিকির সাথে রোঁলাকে একাসনে বসাতে হয় – জার্মানি-ভ্রমণ ও রাশিয়া-গমনের একই মানে দাঁড়ায়।

মোদ্দা কথা হল – আমার অবিশ্বাস দীর্ঘজীবী হোক!

The Not-so-well-known Stories

Around the 1920s, the push for women’s education had begun in a big way in East Bengal. At the forefront of this movement was Barisal, in the south of the country. The late 1880s had already seen a blazing star with Barisal roots, in the form of Dr. Kadambini Ganguly, the first woman physician in South Asia to be trained in European medicine. Inspired by the likes of her, women surged into the field of the educated.

However, it was not possible for every girl and woman, in that era, to step outside the home, in order to study. So the problem was resolved by the ingenuity of those remarkable women, by having women teachers, who were willing and able, to come into antahpur – the very heart of their homes – to teach.
